(Part 2 of my update....)
last week: classes began, as did club info sessions, "mock career expo" by the CMC, Section Rep speeches, COLE fellow meetings, FY/SY kickball, Around The World dinner, and a whole day of reviews... I don't recognize my calendar anymore, and it hasn't really yet begun...!
Classes
Section 4 somehow got got stuck with all 8am classes. There are no classes on Wednesdays (though they're not really "free" - symposiums etc happen then). Classes are 8-10:15, 10:30-12:45, 1:30-3:45, and I think later too, but I haven't had those slots. It's basically 2 hrs with a 15 min break in the middle. The bright side of being here so early is we don't have to battle for parking. The dark side is I did not get much sleep at all last week; I now naturally go to bed between 1-2am...I need to amend that somehow (currently, this isn't helping!)...
- Econ - so far, it's been easy to follow, reminds me of AP econ in high school. Then again, there are phd biologists in my class, so it's understandable we start from the beginning. Though they do reserve the right to cold call - we're basically sitting where we sat the first day. they made a seating chart, and put our pictures on it...
- Stats - as much as I dreaded this class, the teacher is hilarious. He told us not to call him professor, unless we want to be called "MBA candidate." he told us he wouldn't teach us about things that didn't exist, such as unicorns, efficient institutions, or leadership (last two a jab at our GI courses =). He also promised us that's it's hard to get a Low Pass. He said he always gives a bet - if you say you'll get a Low Pass and you do, he'll give you a Superior Pass....no one's ever taken that bet!
- Management Communications - this is a class in which we'll be doing presentations and critiquing each other. the first class we had to do a 2 min speech about an event or person who changed our lives. the stories ranged from the typical grandfathers, to very emotional experiences. 35% of our grade will be a presentation that we have to do in 2 weeks!
- Accounting - was also dreading this but the professor is very matter-o-fact. He basically said he didn't expect us to do everything assigned - that it was up to us to figure out what worked for us, be it the books, his lecture notes, etc. All he cares about is that we can read financial statements when we're done, not "be the bookkeeper"...That was refreshing.
Wednesday was filled with Club info sessions back to back, and CMC stuff.
- Club info sessions - basically, all clubs haev FY (first year) cabinet leadership positions. So these were info sessions to meet the SY's in the cabinet and to learn about the application process. There are TOO MANY clubs...too little time.
- CMC - trying to give us things in small "bites" rather than all a once, we attended sessions by section that had 2nd years on a panel, discussing career expo recruiting experiences. big takeaway: talk to SY's first if they interned or worked at that company so you can ask better questions. also, go to office hours but be prepared for really informal conversation, or something that may feel like an interview.
- Section Rep - so, I'm running. Kind of surprising? In a way, since I never did student government in high school. But on the other hand, my more recent track record of trying to organize things fits a bit better. This would be a stretch though - I wouldn't be organizing a social event, but whomever I select to be the social head of my cabinet would. So it would be a big experience in delegating as well as managing, which is what I need. It felt odd though, to make a "platform" (on a power point slide) that was emailed out and also projected in the hallways all week. Was was weirder was giving a speech - everything i've done before I was hired for or I volunteered for! What's tricky is all the cabinet applications for clubs are due right now, so I'm filling those out, since I don't know what could happen!
COLE - the Center for Leadership & Ethics. This is a big reason we work in teams. We met our COLE Fellow who is in charge of helping us work together as a team, work on dynamics, as well as work 1 on 1 on our Personal Development plan. They take this stuff very seriously here! We had feedback for our team members due today - what's hard is that it's NO anonymous… so I tried to be honest…but we'll see...
FY/SY KickBall - ages ago somewhere on Facebook I signed up for the event and pretty much forgot about it. Then this week we go an email from our "blue team" captain asking us to confirm we were coming. Then, he got injured, and wanted a captain…no one said anything so I stepped up. It wasn't a huge deal, I just had to make sure I knew who was coming (more people bailed because of all our school work). It was nice to meet some 2nd years. Our team lost pretty hard (3 runs total, 1 run per game) but we were good at getting the other team out! I ended up locking myself in the library after since we didn't make the finals and were on campus anyway…but it was fun!
Around The World Dinner - also put on by the MBAA, basically students signed up to host other students. I would have hosted, but sadly, did not have a dining table. I do hope they do it again; nothing bad, but I ended up with people that I somewhat already knew (one from my ILE team!). The food was good though (Chinese & Indian) as was the conversation.
...There was also a 90's party that night...I went for a little bit; somehow had my hgih school bellbottoms & jean jacket to sport, but my D.A.R.E shirt must be at home!!
Annnnnd after all that, I also ended up on campus all day today - Sunday! a group of us met 9-11 to work through stats (quiz tomorrow), then attended the first Fuqua Speaks club meeting (public speaking practice), then fought with the printer in the library, then attended an accounting review session 2-3:30, then kind of wasted time (I need to get better…) then stats review 4-5:30ish….and now it's 1am? this went by to fast…
