It's already past midnight, but I need to keep this up...it's been a week!
Notable from this week: team charter, community project & Day in Durham...
Team Charter - Ah, the famous team charter. We had a session on Monday about an assessment we were going to get back that was a way to explain how we communicate. we broke up into our teams to discuss... I ended up putting it all on a Google Doc so we could see if we were distributed among the 3 type or heavy on some for certain aspects - we all stacked up on "ok with silence" and "interrupts"...the latter will be very interesting as we go on! The next day we had 3 hours allocated to actually work through the charter. We each responded online to 15 items, and then had to fully answer the 15 together... it was much tougher than I expected. It's also pretty amazing that Fuqua is so team-oriented that they have their own online form/process for making charters and keeping charters by team (not just for ILE...but a space for all our future teams)...........That said, we did have a break down at the end of the week for an assignment - our proposed process broke down and resulted in 40+ emails between 9pm and 2am for a paper due at the beginning of GIE at 8am (>_<) We had a little pow wow after class that I semi-forced partially due to some people angry at others with out realizing more than one person was to blame for the situation. We have another assignment due this week...will see how that goes!
Community Project - we had the chance to vote for a preference to consult for a local non profit, or do Habitat for Humanity. Having been indoors a lot, my team opted for the latter... interestingly enough, we ended up using more brain than brawn... while others were digging and hammering holding walls, gravel, etc, we were attempting to build a fence...much harder than it looks - a lot of measurement, checking alignment, fixing processes... especially with a group of all-interrupters, it too so long! In the end we got the frame up and a few boards on, but the afternoon team got it easy - we set it up for them!
There is actually a "House that Fuqua built" that the school sponsors every year; turns out we weren't on that specific one, but no matter, it was still good to do.
Day in Durham - as tempting as it was to sleep / study / exercise / something on Saturday, I signed up to go 11-4 yesterday for this event. It was partially put on by the Net Impact Club, as well as CASE (one of our centers)....The Keynote was Martin Eakes, CEO & Founder of Self-Help (I honestly don't remember if the quote I used for the title of this entry was his, or him quoting someone)... I ended up on the sustainability track, and we got to visit Burt's Bees - didn't realize they were headquartered here! The office is gorgeous - it's part of the American Tobacco campus, which is a ton of brick warehouses that have been renovated for offices, restaurants, etc. They have a very intense waste system, with composting and a ton of recycling, which results in ZERO materials to a landfill (there's some burning involved?). However, they also import their wax from Africa, so there are always tradeoffs. Interestingly enough, their R&D lab is out in the open in the office - it's not behind walls and no one has to be afraid of any chemicals... they joked that sometimes they'll smell peppermint in the morning if that's what's being used to experiment with new products =)
g'nite!
