"people like historical figures, but probably not with a hippo"

That paraphrased quote is from our marketing professor. He was talking about an experiment where, based on survey data concerning what people like in paintings, they made a "perfect painting" with all the elements - which of course, turned out to be a horrible painting, since it was trying to be everything to everyone, and not taking into consideration the dependencies of the variables!

As you can tell, term 1 is in full swing. Fall break was a blink of an eye, and this term I feel like I have 6 classes instead of 4….

Break -
I did it! 5 cities in about 10 days. It was insanely busy, and I should have probably been working on my STAR stories and off campus internship research, but it was good. Microsoft's visit included their envisioning lab (we got to play with Kinect!), and Expedia basically showed us their whole building, including their nap area. LA was a bit weird, since some companies pretty much gave the impression that an MBA isn't needed, and no matter what you need to start from the bottom. We did meet the CFO of myspace (Fuqua Alum) at Fox, who had some interesting news about their revamp!
Net Impact was eye opening, but also a little overwhelming as a lot of tracks were going on at the same time; I volunteered 8 hours and was basically a trash nazi, making people realize that almost everything they were eating with (plates, utensils, etc) were compostable!…
At home of course I got to walk the dog and catch up with friends. I also stumbled upon my halloween costume when a friend had crocheted ogre ears to be shrek and decided to be a teenage mutant ninja turtle instead (I landed at 8:37 and made it to the 10:30 bus to the school party as Fiona ;o)

Fall 2 Classes
It was a bit hard to catch up after missing two days - I tried my best to watch the lectures, as well as do all the work for the upcoming 2nd classes (which was partially hard since the course packs I needed to pick up - with cases , lecture notes, and problem sets - were on campus and I could only get them on Nov 1st!)
If we haven't exempted, we have Strategy, Marketing, Finance, and a continuation of our presentation/communications course. On top of that, I'm in HSM I think officially, and P4E has started to meet (though it's easier, since we're ahead of most of the class when thinking about our target market since we had been meeting!)…. there are some who took Finance last term because they exempted something else, or exempted Marketing, so they're either not taking a ton of classes, or experimenting with some other electives early.

The internship hunt
Microsoft came and presented, and was able to go to their office hours. What was surprising was getting to go to Magnolia Grill with the Hasbro team - I had asked a SY about her internship, so she gave them my name on a short list of people who got invited! The alumni included the man in charge of the Transformers brand and another guy in charge of Playdough! Google also came to campus which was a big deal, but they kind of scared people away talking about the CS requirements for product management, or if you want to switch careers, apply with what your background is and maybe you can switch internally later…hmm. In general I'm trying not to freak out, but it's a hard decision - go with the big names? Find something small? try something completely different? A lot of bigger companies use the internship pool as the feeder for full time, which some people love (if you get an offer the start of your senior year, you're good to go!)

Other/Fun Stuff

  • Fuqua Friday this past weekend was off campus for Diwali, hosted by Indus. It had a huge buffet and a dance floor. I'm affectionately being called a "coconut" here; it was a bit awkward since I didn't know really know how to dance to "Indian" music, unless it's choreographed (per undergrad days...)
  • Fuqua Speaks is a public speaking club I've been trying to attend - they had a joint event with Fuqua Improv which was really fun.
  • On Saturday, the culinary club hosted a chocolate progressive - 8 apartments, with 8+ different things to taste! Very overwhelming. I don't even like chocolate that much, but it was $5, but I got to meet more SY's! A ton of others did the Deloitte case competition that day and were fried and freaking out about the work they didn't do instead; felt a bit guilty for going out! I did go to an 8:30am Finance review session on Saturday though; I deserved a break!
  •
Exercise: considering I like classes much better than machines (and my knees hate me when I run), it's been getting hard. A ton of stuff happens right when gym classes that I like are going on (other option is Spin at the crack of dawn)! I was pretty good about sticking hard and fast to Fridays 12-1 kick box bag (shower before 1:30 class) but Fall2 I have class at that time =(
  • Non-Dukies - I have 1 friend at UNC I've seen a handful of times, one non-Fuqua Duke friend, a family friend's kid in the area, and another former UNCe-r buddy. They're so close, but it's been so hard to hang out! It's hard enough trying to schedule time to meet up with  Fuqua student if someone's stuff it at someone's apartment
  • Eating out - need to get better at this. I bring lunch to school, but need to keep trying more places. So far have repeated: Sushi Love (they have 2 for 1 deals all the time) and Vita (right next door to apt, and had awesome Living Social deals!). Gave in actually ordered delivery at school - 2x Chinese, 1x Mediterranean (there's a whole website listing places that will deliver to school).  I usually try and save half for lunch the next day if I was stuck at school late; though once my leftovers disappeared from the fridge...
